In memory of Dozer

I held his paw and slept by his side for 14 days in hospital. But it turned out, all the love in the world wasn’t enough to save him. Thus begins the final post on Life of Dozer.

My dearest Dozer,

You came into my life in my arms, holding you protectively. And after almost 14 years together, I held you in my arms protectively again as I said goodbye.

I was sobbing so hard, I forgot everything I wanted to say to you in our final moments together.

So I started writing this letter to you, to say all those things.

I wanted to reminisce about our wonderful times – the thousands of visits to the dog beach, all the wonderful food we sampled together, the cuddles, the neck-scratching-sessions, our road trips.

Dozer Nagi at Bayview May 2022

I wanted to thank you for spreading the joy that is you with readers all around the world, for happily coming along with me to meet readers at events, book signings, fund raisers, lunches, dinners, not to mention TV shows, photo shoots, and my gosh, we can’t forget our stint on Play School!

But as I sit here, typing away with tears streaming down my face, I realise that’s not what I want to say to you.

What I want to say is thank you.

Thank you for giving me your whole heart.

Thank you for giving me your unconditional loyalty.

Thank you for loving me just as I am, for all my flaws, for never caring what I weigh, what I wear, what I look like.

Thank you for always being there, my one constant through the good and bad times.

Thank you for making me smile, even on the hardest of days.

And thank you for trying so hard to stay with me as long as you could, fighting to heal until your very last day. I will never forget how deep you had to dig to find the strength for your rehab walk on our final morning together.

I know that one day, I will be able to look at photos of you again without sobbing. And I know all this pain I am feeling is because I loved you so fiercely and completely, and I wouldn’t trade it for a second I got to spend with you.

But right now, four days after saying goodbye, it feels like the heartbreak will never heal, like I will never smile again.

Rest in peace, my darling Dozer. I will never forget you, and I will never stop loving you.

Love,

Your mum xoxo

Thank you SASH

To the vets and nurses at the Small Animal Specialist Hospital (SASH),

Thank you for the extraordinary care, skill, and kindness you showed Dozer. Every moment, from the medical expertise to the gentle reassurance and cheering him on, meant more to me than I can say. Knowing he was in such capable, compassionate hands gave me comfort during the hardest days. I will always be deeply grateful for everything you did for my beautiful boy. – Nagi x

    Dearest Nagi,
My Heart Goes out to you in your time of sorrow. Even though I Didn’t know him personally, I was praying that he would get better. Now I’m Crying for you both after reading your post. I Will miss the antics that he got into. I am sure that he will not be forgotten and that he is waiting for you in heaven. Thank you both for all the tears of laughter that you gave us through the years. Got to go now,but do take care. Love Trish

I always loved this Irish poem…

May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sunshine warm upon your face.
May the rains fall upon your fields.
    And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

(With heartfelt condolences from New York…..)

Nagi I share your pain – I have lost 6 furry friends over the past few years, one as recently as last week (2 dogs and 4 cats).Lost my two 17 year old dogs within three days of each other.
We do love them fiercely and as the late Queen Elizabeth said- the price of love is grief.
Hang in there Nagi we are all thinking of you and the beautiful Dozer 💔

    Dear Nagi,

Nothing can ever prepare you for the loss of your pet (family). Nothing. I have never had children but my cat (and current cat) are my world. My sweet soul cat lived for an additional 14 months after being given 2 weeks to live. Those additional 14 months, while I adored the extra time, could still not prepare me for the moment it happened. I wear the ashes of my baby around my neck everyday. I “cuddle” his ashes in the cat-shaped urn I have him in.

Let NO ONE tell you how you should grieve – EVER!

We all loved Dozer but none of us as much as you did.

    You do you x

Sending you all my love xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

My heart is breaking 💔 😢 for you at this time. Thank you for sharing your boy with us all these years. It feels like I’ve lost my dog because Dozer was all our dog – he belonged to everyone who read your posts, cooked your recipes or just looked at him enjoying his life.
You were truly a great mum to him.
    Sending much love ❤️ 😍 💖 ❣️

Dear Nagi, I know how you are feeling. I too loved and lost my precious Great Dane Anna. My tears, like yours still fall. It is no small blessing to love a dog as much as you love Dozer. It is a a love that lasts forever. Meanwhile, he will wait for you at Rainbow Bridge. xxx

Dear Nagi, My heart aches for you.at 66 years of age I have lost a few older furbabies and it’s heartbreaking. I lost my 17 year old 4 months ago and I have never sobbed for so long or so much ever before. I can finally smile at her pictures but the fact is it is so damn hard every single day. RIP Dozer you and Nagi are so lucky to of chosen each other.
