Throwback from the 80’s! All you need is French Onion Soup mix, sour cream and mayonnaise to make this utterly addictive French Onion Dip that is way better than store bought dip. This is the ONLY recipe I make using a store bought packet mix – a testament to how good it is!

Easy French Onion Soup Dip - throwback from the 80's I'll never stop making, made with French Onion Soup Mix. recipetineats.com

I really don’t think I’m a food snob – hey, I’m that person who has confessed to doing the KFC and Maccers drive through of shame. But I was brought up with food made from scratch and my mother ended up doing a great job of brain washing me because I never use store bought packet mixes or recipe bases. It just doesn’t taste right to me, it has an edge of artificial-ness, and usually they are too salty.

This French Onion Dip is the one exception to my rule.

It’s made using French Onion Soup mix. And I love it. I don’t care what anyone says. And I bet my mum would love this too!

Even though it starts with a packet soup mix, this is still way better than French Onion Dip bought in a tub. For one thing, it’s really soft – French Onion Dip sold in tubs are usually quick thick unless left out to soften. And it tastes less artificial than store bought dip. I think the sour cream goes a long way to add an element of freshness to this dip.

This is a quick, short post because it’s an extra recipe for today, a reader request! So I’m signing off. Hope you enjoy! Nagi xx

Prevent screen from sleeping

I love this simple recipe! Though, this is the first time I put mayo in it. This recipe and green onion dip are recipes I like adding cottage cheese to. Occasionally. I have absolutely no issues as is. I just like shaking things up once in a while. It will also reduce the saltiness. So heads up. Reduce sour cream to compensate or add salt.

I rarely leave comments, but this dip is delicious and it makes so much. I will NEVER buy it out of the can or jar again.

This was a standard for us at parties, but our recipe was different. Growing up in the bush I don’t think we had sour cream, we used cream cheese. Warm it a little, and mix through. If it’s too firm just add a dash of warmed milk until soft enough. Super tasty. And we found the home brand soup mix was better than the name brand for this delight!

Believe it or not, the soup website lead me all over w/o getting to this classic recipe! I was glad I searched again & found yours. Personally, I don’t care for mayo/Mir. Whip, so I substituted 1/2 yogurt – YUM – and many thanks!!

    Hi Nagi,
I enjoy and use many of your recipes. I hope you won’t mind one suggestion/correction: Lipton soup mix was introduced in 1952. Instead of “throwback to the 80’s,”“Throwback to the ‘50’s” is more accurate.

Yes, Liptons’ French Onion Soup Mix came out in 50’s but I never heard of the Onion Dip craze until the late 60’s…

I had a limited amount of sour cream so made up the difference with plain Greek yogurt (8ish ounces of sour cream)…still delicious!!!

I add 2 tblsp of gerkin relish. It will lift this from ordinary to extraordinary.

Ratio is wrong as the soup base does not come in this size

I’ve been making plain ol’ soup mix & sour cream dip for years; but this is MUCH better! The addition of mayo makes it creamier & the flavors are better balanced. GREAT!!
